Why I Love the Finnish

The number one comment I get about Jacob is how doggone happy he is.  People ask if he ever cries (yes, he does; try telling him he may not play with the shutters). The other day, his pediatrician asked if he was always so content and calm, and said she wished she had more patients like him. Last week, another mom at the playground watched him walking up to a tire swing and said, “He looks like a good time!”

Jacob is a giggly kid. I get it when I’m tickling him or we’re playing peek-a-boo. But when I stand in the path of a door I know he wants to close and he laughs so hard I think he’s going to fall over, I can’t figure out what’s going through his head.

Chocolate.

Not chocolate that he’s ingested, but chocolate I ate when I was pregnant with him. A 2004 study at the University of Helsinki, Finland, found that mothers who ate chocolate daily while pregnant reported their babies were more active and had more positive temperaments (they smiled and laughed more) at six months of age.

You’re welcome, Jacob.  And No. 2.

Some parts of being pregnant stink. But other parts are really good.
